You may recall last November during E4K that we announced our focus for the coming year, which was addressing childhood hunger. Well, Great Lakes Regional Rep Jean Hayes couldn’t wait to get started! With Random Acts’ support, she helped make the holiday season better for needy families in her community.
Healthy Kids for the Holidays
Adopt-a-family projects are fairly common over the holidays. Families in need request things to help celebrate the season, like clothing, toys, and perhaps personal care comforts. Grant Township in Lake County, Illinois has been organizing their annual Adopt-A-Family drive for 26 years, providing gifts for families in their community. They provide groceries for holiday meals, along with items fro the families’ wish lists. These are mostly shelf-stable foods, with small amounts of fresh produce as available.
Shopping for the Kids
Being a mother of two young children herself, Jean knows what kinds of fresh foods kids enjoy most. And like many moms, she likes to include fruit in her kids’ Christmas stockings, as has been tradition in many families for centuries. Her kids’ favorite fruit (and mine, for that matter)? Apples. With funding from Random Acts, Jean played St. Nicholas for local kids and provided fresh apples to fill their holiday stockings. Over 90 families each received a small bag of fresh apples, along with other donations.
Just Getting Started
