Though it may be hard to believe, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a positive impact in an unlikely way. Animal shelters in the United States are emptying as more and more people are sheltering at home with newly adopted pets! However, the shelters are not empty yet, so they still need our support. Random Acts Regional Representative Emily Rivera-Jackson, inspired by her love of nature and animals, decided to help out her local animal shelter, the Suncoast Humane Society in Englewood, Florida.
Supporting Suncoast Animals
The Suncoast Humane Society is a non-profit organization founded in 1971. They have expanded over the years to meet the needs of animals in the area. They not only physically shelter animals, but they also have prevention and community outreach programs that provide low-cost spay/neuter procedures, vaccinations, pet therapy, and a pet food bank.
As is the case with many animal shelters, the Suncoast Humane Society has a wish list of their most urgently needed items. This list made the process of shopping for donations easy for Emily. Using funds provided by our generous donors, Emily was able to purchase treats, dog beds, blankets, soap, and cleaning supplies. Then came the best part: visiting the animal shelter!
Emily was greeted by Jacqueline Elliott, the director of Community Relations for the Suncoast Humane Society. She got a tour of their facilities and saw all of the adorable animals available for adoption. Emily explained that Jacqueline “was very thankful, and the dogs were happy to get a visitor.”
