We have so much fun every year sharing stories of kindness from our staff all over the world. Our next stop in our #RAHolidayKindness trail is in Hamburg, Germany. Copy Editor Ann-Kathrin Bomkamp found a little space where a lot of brightness could make a big difference.
Showing Support
Several years ago, a fence was built around Hamburg Central Station in an effort to prevent people experiencing homelessness from using the station as a shelter. Many citizens felt that this was unkind. In a silent protest, people began to attach bags of donations to a nearby fence. These items ranged from toiletries, warm clothing, food, kind words — anything someone would need during a difficult time. The effect? This barricade was transformed into a “Gabenzaun”, or “gift fence”.
Ann-Kathrin felt inspired by this wonderful coming together of the community, and decided to participate. She asked the local volunteers who watch over the fence what the “fence guests” are in need of. The response was one we hear often for people experiencing homelessness — warm socks. She was able to purchase more than 100 pairs to hang on the Gabenzaun. We hope that the people of Hamburg are a little bit warmer this holiday season!
