Kayla Schneider is the Northeast United States representative for Random Acts, living about an hour east of New York City. This coastal region often suffers brutal winter cold and fierce storms blowing in from the ocean. Kayla wanted to provide a clothing donation to help people in need of winter warmth as the holidays approached.
While looking for donation options, Kayla learned about the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless. This group brings together community organizations and services to assist homeless and at-risk individuals. The Coalition had put out a call for the supplies they most needed, including winter clothing items.
“I knew that I wanted to help the homeless stay warm this season,” explains Kayla. “I thought this was the perfect act to combine kindness and the holiday.”
Delivering Warmth
Kayla looked online for the best prices to maximize her clothing donation. She was fortunate enough to find a bulk supplier. In the end, Kayla was able to donate more than 200 items including gloves, hats, and scarves. The director of the Coalition accepted the overflowing delivery, letting Kayla know that her donation “would help so many people in need.”
Kayla knew that since the shelter had a specific need for winter weather gear, her donation would be sure to help. Even with her donation, the shelter’s supply of warm clothing was still very limited. This just made Kayla want to do even more.
“This shelter was struggling to provide for everyone,” says Kayla. “It felt very nice to know I was helping others in my community with the basic need of warmth.” An excellent holiday gift, indeed.
