We came, we saw, and we repaired! At the end of August, Random Acts staffers attended one of the largest multi-genre conventions in the country, Dragon Con. Shawna, Jenny, Kiernan and Becky (from the Acts, Communications and Writing Departments, respectively) were onsite to help attendees with their cosplay, and spread the word of how Random Acts is changing the world.
Hot Glue to the Rescue!
One of the most popular aspects of Dragon Con from the very beginning is cosplay. Because the convention is multi-genre, folks show up in costumes hailing from television, movies, books — and sometimes, a mash-up of all three. Here at Random Acts, we are pretty big fans of creativity and self-expression, and there was no shortage of funny, astounding and truly inspired cosplays filling the halls.
The one thing they all had in common? The occasional malfunction. From a button popping off, to needing a new piece of Velcro, to a bit of zombie prosthetic not quite sticking to a nose, the Random Acts Cosplay Repair booth was able to help cosplayers look and feel their best. If you have never participated in cosplay before, a little insight: cosplayers spend a lot of creative time and energy putting together their outfits. Something going wrong at the big event can be pretty devastating. We were on site to provide peace of mind for those creators, and met lots of kindness loving friends along the way!
Spreading Kindness
Here’s the thing about kindness — often, nothing spreads it faster than witnessing it. While Random Acts staffers used their skills to get cosplayers back to the convention, attendees who visited the table felt inspired to do acts of kindness themselves! Some participated in our Kindness Bingo. Others left us with small “swag” gifts to hand out, or told us how they have done kindness acts in their lives.
Many attendees who visited the booth told us they had ideas on how to #getkind in their own communities, but did not have the financial means to do so. We were able to point them in the direction of our Sponsored Kindness program. We cannot wait to see what they come up with!
Did you witness an act of kindness at a con you attended? We would love to hear your stories! Fandom spaces are a great place for like-minded folks to inspire and help one another. Let us know how you have witnessed a little kindness being spread!
