In November, Random Acts encouraged all of our supporters to take part in our annual Endure4Kindness (E4K) event and, as always, you blew us away with your creativity and kindness. Money raised during Endure4Kindness allows us to sponsor acts of kindness all around the world. This year, funds from E4K are also going towards fighting childhood hunger. Whether you challenged yourself with your own E4K activity, spread the word on social media, supported others with their E4K fundraising, or donated to The Bad Idea Tour, your participation is helping to make the world a better place. We love being able to share some of the ways that your hard work is helping to fight food insecurity. Time to see what Random Acts did to fight childhood hunger in Puerto Rico!
Serving San Juan
Iglesia Metodista (Methodist Church), under the leadership of Reverend José Espada Marrero, serves the community of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Through their different programs, the church interacts with some of Puerto Rico’s most impoverished children. In particular, Iglesia Metodista offers support to the Barrio Obrero area of San Juan, which they say is known for having a large population of immigrants struggling with food insecurity. US South East Representative Emily Rivera-Jackson reached out to the church to see what Random Acts could do to help them feed children in Puerto Rico.
Computer Clicks to Food Kits
Based on suggestions from Iglesia Metodista, Emily used #RANoHungryChild funds to order loads of food to be delivered to the church. Emily focused on foods that were not only shelf-stable, but also easy for kids to grab and eat during times that adults may not be around to help with more complex food preparation and cooking. Random Acts sponsored the order and delivery of baby cereal puffs, baby cereal, baby food, hot and cold cereals, granola bars, boxed fruit juices, crackers, apple sauce, pasta, peanut butter, jelly, rice, canned beans, shelf-stable milks, fruit snacks, and pretzels.
Iglesia Metodista sorted everything into food kits that could easily be given to children in need. The church sent 31 of these food kits home with kids dealing food food insecurity during their Summer Bible School program. Then, they distributed the rest of the donated food to families throughout the Barrio Obrero area.
Thank you for being our boots on the ground, Iglesia Metodista! We appreciate all of the great work that you do for the community of San Juan, Puerto Rico.
