Monique, fondly known as Moni, has been a guiding light at Random Acts for nearly four years. Her journey here has been a whirlwind of growth, passion, and unyielding dedication to the cause of kindness. From the moment she stumbled upon a job posting on Twitter, Moni felt an inexplicable connection to Random Acts.
“When I first saw the job posted on Twitter, I saved it because I didn’t have bandwidth then,” she recalls. “A few months later, it came up again and I thought, this time I’m going to look into it.” That moment of serendipity led Moni to a role that would align perfectly with her skills and passion. Starting as a Project Coordinator, she quickly moved through the ranks, showcasing her versatility and commitment. “Random Acts is a great place for growth and development,” Moni says with a proud smile. “In fact, I had the record for the shortest amount of time in a position before moving to another one that matched my goals.”
Moni’s career trajectory at Random Acts is a testament to the organization’s supportive environment. Her transition from Donor Appreciation Coordinator to Fundraising Manager and now to Strategic Deputy Director highlights the endless possibilities for professional development within the team. “I’ve stayed in the fundraising and strategic parts of the organization because it aligns so well with my passion for making a difference and my resume,” she adds.
A Rich and Diverse Background
Moni’s professional journey is as diverse as it is impressive. With an undergraduate degree in medical technology, she began her career in labs, specializing in blood banking. However, her husband’s job required frequent relocations, prompting Moni to pivot and adapt continuously.
“I decided to take computer courses, which really worked with my science brain! I loved it so much, I ended up teaching computer courses as a software instructor,” she explains. Moni’s adaptability saw her working across various roles in administration and project management, including a significant stint at the University of Michigan’s medical school research department. “I worked on the LADR study that was the precursor to the cure for Hepatitis C and the A2ALL study, which focused on living donor transplant surgeries,” she recalls with pride.
Her work at these institutions added to her sense of purpose, making a tangible difference in the world. “I realized I took a lot of pride in being a part of something that added to the greater good for the world.”
A Passion for Kindness and Volunteerism
Moni’s introduction to Random Acts came through her participation in GiSH, a global scavenger hunt promoting kindness and creativity. “When I joined Random Acts, the organization restructured to focus specifically on Acts of Kindness, really streamlining our efforts to make a difference,” she says.
Her work at Random Acts has been transformative, not just for the community but for Moni herself. “I love working with people who are so selfless and so kind. Random Acts has made me a better person, just by following the example of the people around me.”
Life Beyond Volunteering
Outside of her professional life, Moni finds joy in simple pleasures. Her life revolves around her beloved dog and her husband of 33 years. “My husband and I enjoy wineries and craft distilleries. We love to walk along the boardwalk by the ocean, talking and enjoying each other’s company,” she shares. Their dog, Dolly, is the center of their world, joining them on walks whenever the weather permits.
Monique Lowe’s story is a beautiful one of dedication, adaptability, and kindness. At Random Acts, she has found a place that helps her make the world a kinder place, one act at a time.
