Acts of kindness come in all different shapes and sizes. Some acts are large, funded projects, while others are smaller and bring joy in more unexpected ways. One of those small acts that can bring a big smile is a cheerily painted rock, hidden around town. The movement to spread uplifting rocks, painted with colorful pictures, patterns, and sayings, started in 2015 when Megan Murphy began The Kindness Rock Project. Since then, groups around the world have formed, both small and large, to paint rocks to spread kindness. There is even an “International Drop a Rock Day” on July 3, started by the WordRocksProject. A theme is chosen each year, and rocks are decorated accordingly to be distributed around communities.
Rocks + Paint = Joy
The last two years have changed how many people interact socially, and it has been an emotionally draining time. Misty Cash, a Random Acts Regional Representative for the Southeast United States, sought a way for students to come together, especially when they have experienced such profound and unexpected distance. She purchased a bundle of art supplies and had the students paint rocks together. “Focusing on painting helps them de-stress and feel they are helping others,” Misty said. The students covered the rocks with beautiful art, colorful characters, and supportive messages. While they painted, they discussed other ways to help their community. Not only did they spend positive time together, but they also earned service hours for their participation.
They will spread these rocks around town to bring joy and support to others. “These types of activities have been an excellent way for me to meet students and tell them about all the ways they can volunteer and participate in Random Acts activities,” Misty said, reflecting on the act.
