As a passionate animal rescuer, Random Acts Supporter Mary Burke knows the importance of the relationship between humans and animals. When Robert, a friend who had rescued two older horses, fell on hard times, she knew it would be difficult for him to keep them. She also knew that if he couldn’t keep them, there would be no place else for them to go. Shelters in the area were full to overflowing. Placing one horse with a club foot and another horse that had been abused wasn’t an option either. Mary’s experience told her that people are abandoning animals at shelters, and there aren’t enough who can take on more animals, especially ones that require special care. So, she was relieved when she found out that he would continue to care for the horses, and decided that she would help.
From Feeling to Feed
Mary heard about Random Acts from her brother and sister-in-law. That’s when it clicked: she could reach out to Random Acts to get funds for things like horse feed. She put in her application and got the funds. Then, she went shopping. It was a big job. The people at the feed store helped to load up what she got. They needed to; she was able to buy 1100 pounds!

After delivering the feed, Mary and her friend took some time with the horses. He was grateful for her help, calling the gift of the horse feed a blessing. Even though Robert had been putting the horses before himself, he was assured several times that this help truly was for him and that he wasn’t keeping some other deserving person from getting what they needed. He expressed his gratitude again saying that the horse feed would be enough for months.   If you know of any rescued animals or animal rescuers that need help and are inspired by Random Acts supporter Mary Burke, please consider starting your own act here.
