As the saying goes, “A friend in need is a friend indeed.” The dearest friends are those who know that even a small act of kindness can make a big impact.
Old Friends

Cindy Kolbe met her friend Cara years ago through the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, which serves individuals living with the effects of paralysis. The two women both have children who were in accidents that led to quadriplegia.
Cindy knew that hard-working Cara did not shy away from challenges, such as when she put herself through nursing school while working full time. Cara now works as a hospice nurse, and she is Mom to four young-adult children. “I hoped to give some joy to someone who is always giving to others,” says Cindy. “Despite going through difficult times, she continues to be focused on caring for others at home and at work.”
Cindy knew that Cara had been thinking of some new artistic hobbies, but that she was feeling overwhelmed and finances were tight. Cara had been hoping to try her hand at painting and cake decorating. She also hoped to return to a regular jogging routine. Cindy decided that her friend deserved some recognition for her caring ways through a gift of baking supplies, paints, and jogging gear.
New Joys
Excited texts flew back and forth as Cindy asked Cara what projects she wanted to do and what kind of supplies she needed. Cindy even encouraged Cara to splurge on a wish list item: a trendy Stanley water cup. With the delivery of each package to Cara’s home in Lodi, CA, USA, Cara texted her gratitude for her friend’s kindness. When Cara was not able to unpack one of her gifts right away, she even texted, “Boo. I wanted to use it ASAP!”
Cindy enjoyed supporting her friend with a small but uplifting gesture. “It boosted my mood to know that Cara is appreciated in a tangible way, and her needs are valued.” It goes to show that a gift does not have to be large or impressive to be valuable. Some of the best kindnesses come from just showing that we are thinking of someone.
