Fans came from all over the southern part of the United States to attend MomoCon in Atlanta, GA at the end of May. Random Acts was in attendance at the event to hear your kindness stories and spread a little kindness of our own.
Dressing Up
MomoCon is an anime (Japanese animation) convention that just celebrated its 14th year in downtown Atlanta. One of the aspects it is best known for is the different types of costumes that the attendees wear during the weekend. Cosplay, or the creation and wearing of costumes based off of anime, television or movie characters, is an important and celebrated part of the event. Random Acts decided to run a “Cosplay Repair Booth” during the weekend at our table. This entailed bringing a variety of different sewing and craft supplies that cosplayers use free of charge in case their costume was in need of repair. I was in attendance to make these repairs, and I can say firsthand – I have never felt so appreciated!
As I used to make costumes and attend anime conventions myself, I am familiar with how much work is put into each ensemble. Sometimes the heat, travel, or a gust of wind can cause one aspect of a cosplay to go awry. Luckily, we were onsite with supplies including hot glue, a sewing machine, safety pins and the ever versatile Duck Tape. You can see below some of the costumes that stopped by the booth for a free repair. They were all shapes, sizes, colors and themes, but all left with a smiling face once everything was fixed!
More Than Just a Stitch
This event is a perfect example of thinking outside of the box to create a little more kindness in the world. Many people (even those without costumes on) commented how nice it was to know that even if something went wrong, they would have a place to turn to. Sometimes that peace of mind of knowing someone has your back makes all the difference. Along the way, I was also able to teach a few people how to sew; an activity that my grandmother taught me, and means a lot for me to pass on.
